MAYOR SAM LAGRONE ENCOURAGED BY ROSWELL’S CONTINUAL ECONOMIC STRENGTH

CITY OF ROSWELL PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE AN INCREASE IN CITY GROSS RECEIPTS TAX REVENUES

(ROSWELL, N.M.) – The City of Roswell and Mayor Sam LaGrone are happy to announce an increase in the city’s gross receipts tax revenues and the ongoing strength of the local economy and potential for economic growth.

“We are pleased to report that the City of Roswell collected $2,808,713 in gross receipt tax revenues, which is a 22.5% increase over the same period last year,” said Mayor Sam LaGrone.  “We feel hopeful that Roswell will be able to weather this economic state and continue to maintain levels of receivables that will be similar or slightly increased from last year.”

Mayor LaGrone said that while things are still tight, the city is doing a great job at balancing the budget and maintaining high standards for the quality of life in Roswell.  The city does not foresee any layoffs at this time.  He also said that the city continues to be an optimal destination for relocation and retirement.

The City is up 1% in gross receipt tax revenues fiscal year 2010 to date [July through February] when compared to the same period in fiscal year 2009,” said Larry Fry, City Finance Director and Assistant City Manager.  “This reflects the continuing relative strength of the local economy and the results from the Christmas retail season.  This is the first time this fiscal year that the City has been up in GRT collections when compared to fiscal year 2009.”

Additionally, the Roswell Convention and Visitors Bureau reports reveal an increase in visitor traffic and events including  more than a 57% increase in conventions and event revenue, which is a result of focusing 2009 marketing efforts on regional drive markets.  In 2010, the city is expanding marketing efforts beyond the region to reach national and international markets.
